Why Selecting the Right Teacher MattersPosted: Tuesday, June 20th, 2017. Filed under Education
Imagine a classroom with a teacher that is highly engaged and highly satisfied in the work they are doing. A classroom in which every student is valued and nurtured with specific intent on improving their chances of success. An environment in which every student feels safe, where they have a voice that can be used to give real input. What if, every classroom in an entire school was that way? What about every building within a school district? This is the power of selecting the right teacher.
All across America, schools are keeping a keen eye on test scores, disciplinary issues, and budgetary constraints. These same schools find unique ways to combat these issues and challenges as they look to create the best experience possible for the students and families that call their district home. However, what if I told you that the most valuable tools in fighting these challenges were the teachers that were placed in the classroom?
More and more, districts are taking a unique approach to the hiring processes they use to bring in their new crop of teachers. That is where the vision of a fully engaged school comes in. By selecting (vs. hiring) staff members with top-level talent, you are able to give each student in your district the opportunity to interact with motivated and student-focused teachers in every class they walk into.
Imagine the conversations taking place at home when the student feels supported and motivated to reach the next level of performance in their coursework. As an administrator, envision the lessened burden of staff-related issues when you have confidence in each selection you make. As one administrator in Texas mentioned, “this takes the hard part out of the equation. Yes, we have staff issues, but a vast majority of my time is spent getting back in the classroom, rather than replenishing them.”
Impact and effort are the true measures of teacher success, and that effort on the teacher’s part is what drives tests scores, limits disciplinary issues, and overcomes budgetary constraints. When you bring the right teacher into the equation, everything else begins to fall into place. And in a world where the classroom is changing every day, administrators and teachers need every tool available to continue making a difference and to help each student realize their potential.
